NOTES ON UPCOMING EVENTS from Miss Cathy...
VOYAGE retreat for 7th and 8th graders: February 15-17. This is a fairly new retreat designed by a very good friend of mine and I am planning on being part of the team for this retreat as well. I have heard great things. It offers a rare opportunity for middle school kids to be open about their faith and have a truly spiritual experience. It is also said to be a lot of fun. This retreat fills up fasts so don't waste time. I will also handle turning in the registration forms for this retreat. Information is available at: http://www.cdom.org/departments/youth/documents/VOYAGE%20Registration%20Form%202008.pdf
SEARCH (for Christian maturity) retreat for 11th and 12th graders: Feb. 22-24 & Feb 25-27. I will not be on team for this retreat but if any of my kids go I will make several appearances. This is a life changing retreat (I know b/c it changed mine back in 1999). I recommend that all young Catholic adults make this retreat and probably even all non-Catholics. Again, I will be glad to collect the forms and send them in! Check out the site and print out a registration form! http://www.cdom.org/departments/youth/documents/SEARCH%20FORM%2007-08.pdf
Diocesan Youth Celebration: March 7-8. This event is open to all youth 7-12th grade. I am planning on taking a group of the Jr. High and would welcome any Sr. High attendees as well. This event has been completely revamped this year and I am excited to see what they have planned! The keynote speaker is a musician and has a wonderful message and a cool way of delivering it. Plus, the t-shirt is awesome this year! It will be held at St. Benedict and is open to guests. There is a closing dance type situation that includes karaoke! I have been to 10 of these events and they have a lot to offer. I can't be the only youth minister there without a group so SIGN UP!! I need the registration in by January 27th! The forms can be found at: http://www.cdom.org/departments/youth/documents/08%20Youth%20Celeb%20Reg%20Eng.pdf
Youth 2000 (April 11-13) is an event that captures the heart and soul of our faith. It is a Eucharist centered experience that will set the kids on fire for God! You can read all about it at http://www.memphisyouthretreat.org/. All of our young people are welcome to attend! I am praying for a large St.Peter turn out! We will be forming a softball team to participate in the Memphis Catholic Youth Group softball league. The signups will be mid-April and the games will be during the early summer. We will have to take the top prize!!! There will be a Jr. High lock-in but the date has yet to be set. Be looking for a flyer on that!
I am looking into more service ideas and would like to try and get us in on one service project a month (this could be either community or parish service).
I am still trying to get details on a retreat we could take this summer.
It has been suggested that the Sr. High Youth group meeting that occurs once a month at St. Peter's be moved into the Sunday school time slot. This would mean not having to return/stay around after Mass but it would also mean one less weekend of more formal instruction. What do you think about that idea? I don't want anyone to feel like their child isn't getting enough spiritual development from their youth involvement. I do think it would boost the number of people at our youth group meetings on that week! I can not offer this option to the jr. high because I am not their morning teacher.
