MINISTRIES

Parishioners interested in participating in any of these important committees are encouraged
to call the main office at (901) 527-8282.

Altar Guild: The St. Peter Church Altar Guild ministry is a wonderful way for all ladies of our parish to serve the Lord and to get to know one another while maintaining the beauty of the altar. Funds from the Altar Guild's annual dues and events are used for altar cleaning expenses, altar restoration, and flowers for the altar. We also serve the parish in the area of fellowship and provide monthly programs such as gardening, cooking and wine tasting. Click here for a schedule of events.

Archives: The Archives Committee helps to preserve the architectural beauty and historical significance of our church by protecting, preserving, displaying and discovering the rich history of our church through photographs, documents, and artifacts.

Communication: It is the responsibility of the Communication Committee to facilitate the mission of our Dominican friars' preaching and teaching the Gospel. This includes public address systems for the church and parish hall, and in the near future, audio and visual recording of sermons and lectures. In addition, St. Peter Church must communicate with the community at large to inform everyone of the exciting things taking place in our parish.

Hospitality: The Hospitality Committee really has more fun. Come join us and see for yourself. Here are just a few of the things we do: Teams of ladies (and usually a few of the men too!) host the Sunday Socials in our Parish Hall immediately following mass. Wonderful refreshments are served for all to enjoy. Grab a cup of coffee and a “goodie” or two and take time to linger and socialize with fellow parishioners. The hospitality teams not only give of their time but their talents too with all those “mostly” homemade treats. Definitely makes for a happy group.

In addition the committee provides meals for the Lenten suppers, Chez Dominique, Homecoming Sunday, and other special events throughout the year. We also help provide food for post-funeral receptions. And, help out those that can use a home-cooked hot meal while recovering from an illness or the birth of a baby.

We can always use more help, whether it be once a month or once every so often.

Liturgy: Liturgy is defined as prescribed forms or rituals for public worship, in any religion or church. The Liturgy of the Mass is the highest moment of prayer and purpose for Catholic Christians. It is the primary setting where God and His people come together for the good of the whole world. "The Liturgy of the Mass is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; it is the fountain from which all her power flows." -- Vatican II - Constitution on the Liturgy

The goals and objectives of the St. Peter Liturgy Committee are: to inspire all members of the parish to more fully participate in the Mass, and other liturgies throughout the year; to secure more members to serve as Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Gift Bearers, Servers, and Ushers; to help the pastor and staff with all the liturgical activities of St. Peter Parish.

Maintenance: The St. Peter Maintenance Committee consists of parishioners who are committed to preserving and caring for this beautiful, historic church. The committee meets periodically and makes recommendations for projects to improve the Church, oversees repair and maintenance of the Church, and develops long-range plans for maintaining the Church and its physical plant.

Music: Click here for information regarding our Music Ministry.

Outreach: St. Peter's Outreach Ministry is intended to serve as a connection between parishioners and various social and charitable organizations in both downtown Memphis and throughout the entire region. For any parishioner who wishes to serve in any of a vast array of charitable services or events, the Outreach Ministry can find one that fits each individual. For example, the Outreach Ministry currently organizes volunteers for the following: the Church Health Center (a local medical clinic serving Memphians who cannot afford health insurance); an "Angel Tree" at Christmastime, through which St. Peter's collects clothes and toys for underprivileged children in the community of Marks, Mississippi; a local downtown soup kitchen (making sandwiches, serving food and providing kitchen help); and the construction of new homes through Neighborhood Housing Organization. Furthermore, the Outreach Ministry would like to organize volunteers to begin serving in the new Downtown Hospitality Center as soon as it opens, and, in December of 2006, the Ministry plans to provide tutors to assist students at Memphis Diocese's Jubilee Schools.
