FAITH FORMATION 2021

December 21, 2020

Provide lifelong faith formation that deepens our relationship with Christ and forms us into active disciples preaching the Gospel to all the world.

“Stir into flame the gift of God.”

2 Timothy 1:6

Due to the current situation with COVID-19, much of our parish faith formation will be home-based for the first part of 2021. Thank you for your patience as we navigate safely back to in-person formation.

Adult Book Studies

Out of the Depths: The Psalms Speak for Us Today

In January, we are starting a new book study about Psalms. We’ll be using Bernard Anderson’s Out of the Depths: The Psalms Speak for Us Today. Led by Jennie Latta, this study will meet via Zoom on Tuesday evenings. We plan to cover one chapter a week, with participants encouraged to read the chapter before each week’s meeting. Copies are available online or at St. Paul Books.  For more information, or to sign up, contact Christina at [email protected]

The Good Shepherd and the Child: A Joyful Journey

This user-friendly book for parents, grandparents and catechists is an excellent introduction to Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, prayer and spirituality of the young child. We meet via Zoom on Thursday mornings at 9:30. All are invited to join, and it’s okay if you haven’t participated in previous sessions.  After Christmas, we will pick up with Chapter 4 “Sources of Nourishment.” To receive the Zoom links , please email Christina at [email protected]

First Communion Preparation

Grade 1(or Year 1)

Per Diocese of Memphis norms, preparation for First Communion is a two-year process, done usually when a child is in grades 1 and 2.

This spring, we will offer the book I Am the Good Shepherd for our first graders to complete at home. This will be supplemented with the Zoom Children’s Liturgy of the Word sessions, and a few optional atrium sessions (depending on circumstances).

Additional information about preparing for First Communion this year may be accessed here: https://www.stpeterchurch.org/sacraments/first-communion/

Grade 2 (or Year 2)

Per Diocese of Memphis norms, preparation for First Communion is a two-year process, done usually when a child is in grades 1 and 2.

This spring, First Communion preparation for 2nd graders includes the series Blessed First Reconciliation and Blessed First Eucharist, family prayer and onsite mini-retreats offered approximately once a month. First Communion is scheduled for Sunday, April 25th at 11 AM.

Atrium Materials Lending Library (Gr. 3 and younger)

Families who participated in the atrium last year may check out selected atrium materials like the Good Shepherd or Model Altar to work with at home.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (Gr. 3 and younger)

We offer a prayer gathering for children on most Sunday mornings. We read the Sunday Gospel, sing and pray. During the first months of 2021, we will gather via Zoom.

Scriptures, Saints and Virtues (Gr. 4-6)

Students in grades 4-6 are invited to gather for prayer and scripture sharing. During the first months of 2021, we will highlight some interesting saints and look at saintly virtues we see in their lives and ours. We will gather via Zoom on Sunday mornings.

Registration

Families need to register if participating in First Communion, Confirmation, Lending Library or any groups that involve video conferencing. For safety purposes, we will only give out Zoom or Teams links to families registered for faith formation. Registration is not required to attend the Family Masses but is helpful for planning purposes.
