Lent

Lent is a new beginning, a path leading to the certain goal of Easter, Christ's victory over death. This season urgently calls us to conversion. Christians are asked to return to God "with all their hearts" (Joel 2:12), to refuse to settle for mediocrity and to grow in friendship with the Lord. Jesus is the faithful friend who never abandons us. Even when we sin, he patiently awaits our return; by that patient expectation, he shows us his readiness to forgive.

Lent is a favorable season for deepening our spiritual life through the means of sanctification offered us by the Church: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. At the basis of everything is the word of God, which during this season we are invited to hear and ponder more deeply.

Pope Francis, Message for Lent 2017

Pray
  • Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
On Sunday mornings, March 12 - April 2, all are invited to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament in the Shrine Chapel, 9:45 - 10:45.
  • Stations of the Cross and other Lenten Prayer Services at St. Peter
All are invited to join us for Stations of the Cross and other Lenten prayer services at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, March 8 - April 5, in the church. See the "Wednesdays in Lent" tab for the full schedule.

Fast

Ash Wednesday (March 1, 2017) and Good Friday (April 14, 2017) are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. Fasting is for healthy adults age 18-59. Abstinence from meat is for healthy teens and adults ages 14+.

Those that are excused from fast and abstinence (outside the age limits) include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

When possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.
